Chlorination and Dechlorination
Certified chlorination, contact time monitoring, sampling, and safe dechlorination for new and existing water mains.
Chlorination is essential for disinfecting new or refurbished water pipelines before they are put into service. Our certified chlorination and dechlorination process ensures water mains meet strict UK hygiene and regulatory standards, providing safe, clean water for end users.
What Is Chlorination?
Chlorination involves introducing a controlled concentration of chlorine into the pipework to disinfect the internal surfaces. This eliminates bacteria, biofilms, and organic contaminants that could compromise water quality. It is a mandatory requirement for most new mains and is carried out before commissioning or connecting to the existing network.
Key Benefits
Ensures Water Hygiene
Disinfects the full pipeline to remove harmful bacteria and contaminants.
Required for Commissioning
Most water authorities require chlorination before a new main is approved.
Fully Certified & Documented
Includes sampling, lab analysis, and official chlorination certification.
Chlorination Process
Our chlorination process begins with isolating and filling the pipeline before introducing the required chlorine dosage. We then monitor contact time to ensure the disinfectant remains active for the prescribed duration. Once the contact period is complete, water samples are taken and sent for laboratory analysis to confirm that microbiological standards have been met. Successful results allow us to issue full chlorination certification.
Dechlorination
After chlorination and successful sampling, the pipeline must be safely dechlorinated before being brought into service. Dechlorination involves neutralising chlorine levels to environmentally safe limits using approved neutralising agents. This ensures water returned to the environment does not harm local ecosystems and that the pipeline can be safely connected into the existing network.
When Is Chlorination Required?
Chlorination is required for all newly installed mains, newly repaired pipe sections, refurbished pipelines, and any infrastructure that must meet drinking water standards before commissioning. It is also essential when pipework has been left unused for a long period or when contamination is suspected.
Certification & Reporting
Every chlorination project includes laboratory sampling, detailed reporting, and full certification, ensuring the pipeline meets UK water quality regulations and is approved for handover.
